Artist Colony

Featuring the theme “Paint Our Historic Town and Battlefield,” the Gettysburg Festival provides time, space and an inspiring environment for artists of exceptional talent who were juried into the 2012 Artist Colony.

The public is invited to watch these talented artists paint at various sites throughout Gettysburg during their residency. Watch as some of Gettysburg’s most famous landmarks, as well as undiscovered gems, come to life before your eyes on canvas.

The colony provides a retreat-like setting where plein air artists live and work together. Their time together in residency includes painting en plein air (outdoors) in town and country settings, workshops with master artists and professional development opportunities.

Serving as Master Artist, leading the 2012 Artist Colony, is Mark Brockman, an award-winning Adams County artist and instructor at The Delaplaine Visual Arts Center, Frederick, Maryland. Brockman is represented by the Chadds Ford Gallery among others. The Colorist Instructor is Claire Beadon Carnell, owner, Pine School Studio, Gardners, PA. Serving as juror and selecting artists, both established as well as emerging, is Freya Qually, Founder and Senior Instructor, Studio Art Department, Penn State Mont Alto.  The 2012 Artist Colony kicks off with a special orientation by National Park Service Ranger Chuck Teague, providing the rich history of artists who have painted, and will continue to paint, Gettysburg's hallowed scenes.

“Painting on location in Gettysburg is a life-changing, artist-in-residence experience,” said Festival Executive Director Beth Kirby. “This year’s itinerary explores many undiscovered historic locations throughout Gettysburg, combined with Mark Brockman’s enriching instruction, plus community with fellow artists.”

Several of their painting locations include:

Wed, June 13, 6:30 pm-dark:  Eternal Peace Light Memorial, Gettysburg National Military Park
Fri, June 15, 10 am-2 pm:  Eisenhower National Historic Site
Sat, June 16, 7:30-9:30 am:  Spangler Farm, Gettysburg National Military Park
Sun, June 17, 8:30-11 am:  Lincoln Square, Gettysburg

The public is also invited to see an exhibit of works created by the Artist Colony at the Majestic Theater, June 8-15.

On June 16, from 4-8 pm, the exhibit switches focus to a display and sale of artwork created during the 2012 Artist Colony at Gettysburg Festival. The public is invited to come meet the artists, enjoy the reception and conversation, while viewing the newly-created artwork, all of which will be for sale.

This project is financed in part by a grant from the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, Department of Community and Economic Development.
